Grade 5 South March Public School, Kanata, Ontario
I have to admit that I could get used to waking up to the sound of the surf from the ocean.
We are starting to meet a few teachers from around the world. Today I met teachers from England and Scotland. We were told that the Canadian team is the biggest, with 17 teachers. The rest of the countries average 5 teachers each.
This morning all of the teachers went to the market. It was about a twenty minute cab ride from here. We got to experience how to barter for things. I’m proud to report that I was able to get the price lowered on some pictures by about 20 Reals.
Once again we were struck by the contrast of rich and poor. One moment you would see very modern looking marinas, hotels and houses and the next second you would see large rundown areas like this one:
We later went up an outdoor elevator to see a little more of the city. Lots of people were trying to sell us ribbons and water and the like. Some were pushier than others.
More pictures from the day:
Our neighbouring hotel has quite the outdoor pool.
This was taken near the market. I could help but be struck by the contrast of people cleaning around the sleeping man on the sidewalk.
Mr. Toft and I couldn’t pass up an opportunity to dress up. The people who were organizing this really enjoyed their work.

Hi Mrs Smith! Mr Toft looks kinda funny in his outfit! Do you know what girls my age would wear? Why does you’re outfit have such a poofy skirt?

I am not sure why the skirts are so poofy. Maybe they are cooler than tight fiting clothing. Good question.

Hi Campbell
We didn’t do anything special for Hallowe’en. Our group was pretty tired. The plane ride from Ottawa to Toronto was only 45 minutes buth the flight from Toronto to Sao Paolo was 11 hours, I was happy to go to bed

Hi Mrs. Smith. We have welcomed Austin Colter, our new student, into the class today. Have you had a cup of coffee from the coffee grinding place yet? Are you having fun in Brazil?
Tyler has a relative in Brazil and he is wondering if you have seen him yet?
What’s the best thing you have done so far? Mrs. Long thinks you would be very happy to hear that last night it was snowing when she returned from swimming lessons! Today in class we saw two helicopters go by the window. They were very close to the ground and to our school.
In Sarnia it only snows in about mid-December and sometimes it doesn’t snow at all in the winter (Austin has just moved here from Sarnia).
You are so lucky Mrs. Smith because it is so warm there and so cold here!
Bye!

Welcome Austin! I am sorry not to be there to meet you in person. I know that you will find people to be very welcoming. We are all new to South March since it is so new.
Tyler, I met a lot of people from Brazil but no one said they had relatives in Canada. It is a bit hard to communicate with some of the people here because the different countries have different languages. I am getting very good at saying obridago, which means thank you in Portuguese.
The most exciting thing that I have done is to try to barter in the market place. Most of the sales people don’t speak English and I don’t speak Portuguese. It is expected that you will negotiate a price for what you are buying. No one pays the asking price. I am getting better at this but it is a bit scary to try to do it and you don’t know if you are really getting a good deal.
I must say that I am happy to be in a place that is 30 degrees. I will get enough snow when I come home.
I am so happy to see your comments and posts on the blog. I am a little bit homesick so it makes me feel connected to you.
Looking forward to reading more comments and posts,
Mrs. Smith
